Drug & alcohol misuse recovery treatments

An integrative and holistic recovery pathway

group therapy

Group Therapy helps educate residents on the recovery process and provides support and motivation from peers to maintain recovery goals. Clients hear of issues encountered by others and observe methods of problem-solving. We encourages clients to offer assistance and feedback to each other. We teach healthy coping skills to manage daily stressors, whilst boosting structure and routine. Group Therapy enables relationships to develop between group members that can be used outside of sessions for support and encouragement. It also enable us to utilise therapeutic tools (such as challenging irrational beliefs and confronting poor decision-making) to modify behaviours.

GOALS GROUP

Held each week, Goals Group enables clients to set individual goals to achieve throughout the therapeutic week. Clients make a commitment in a group setting and report on their progress on a Friday. They will also be challenged about their progress during the week by both their peers and the Oxygen team.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy enables family members, couples and others who care about each other to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely. The sessions help people understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in their relationships and lives. Individuals can find Family Therapy helpful as an opportunity to reflect on important relationships and find ways forward.

mindfulness

Individuals and groups can practice Mindfulness on a day-to-day basis. It can enable people to change the way they think and feel about their experiences, especially stressful experiences. As a mind-body approach, it can increase our ability to manage difficult situations and make wise choices. Formulised Mindfulness therapies include Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which are traditionally delivered in eight week classes.

Auricular Acupuncture

Acupuncture has long been used for all stages of drug treatment. It helps with the detoxification phase of recovery through the entire recovery journey to relapse prevention. The therapeutic goals are to counteract the effects of drug withdrawal and return the individual to a relatively 'neutral' or 'normal physiological state.

Relapse Prevention

Relapse can occur suddenly, and individuals struggling with drug or alcohol cravings can give in without reaching out for help. The best way to prevent sudden relapse is to understand the warning signs of addiction and the factors that commonly lead to relapse. These vary for each person and situation, but relapse causes include emotional triggers, social situations and physical changes. The Relapse Prevention groups identify individual triggers and look at ways of coping with them when they arise.

ART, DRAMA AND CREATIVE WRITING

In Art Therapy, clients use their creativity and imagination to expresses themselves in a healthy and productive way. Art Therapy aims to expand forms of communication in order to better convey experiences, ideas and emotions. It is an expressive group therapy that helps people express the thoughts and feelings they may not be able to say with words. It is especially helpful for people who have underlying psychological issues related to their addiction, such as a history of abuse. Since creating art is often a nonverbal process, it provides an opportunity to explore, understand, and resolve issues that clients may not feel comfortable talking about in a regular conversation.

Reflections Group

Reflections is a check-in group held twice daily, at either end of the therapeutic day. The morning session tracks how everyone is feeling and is a forum for sharing both concerns and hopes for the day. The end of the day/evening check-in serves to see how everyone is and talk about the days achievements.

wellbeing and PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Clients are given the opportunity to try out new activities to improve their mental and physical well-being. Activities vary from week to week and could be anything from gardening or martial arts to the more usual sports like swimming and rounders. Individual physical abilities will always be catered for. We regularly practice yoga to make clients feel more relaxed and at ease.
